Southern Illinois Miners News Release

MARION, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners completed their part of the playoff equation with an 11-6 victory over the RIver City Rascals Sunday night. Unfortunately, the Windy City ThunderBolts defeated the Rockford RiverHawks earlier in the evening to officially eliminate the Miners from playoff contention.

Miners starter Brett Scarpetta was inconsistent early, but was able to keep Southern Illinois in the ballgame with 6.0 plus innings. The Miners offense gave him more than enough support as he earned his seventh win. The righty surrendered single runs in the second, third and fourth innings. Scarpetta took the hill for the seventh inning and allowed five straight Rascals to reach base. Three of those runners scored before Scarpetta was pulled in relief of Kevin Dooley with the Miners ahead, 11-6. Dooley struck out two of the three batters he faced to strand both inherited runners.

Southern Illinois had no problem scoring runs, as every Miners starter scored at least one run. Jereme Milons and Landon Camp paced the Miners offensively with three RBIs apiece. Milons was 4-for-5 with a run scored and two stolen bases. Milons finished the season with 38 swipes, extending his lead in the Southern Illinois record book. Landon Camp's bases loaded triple in the fourth inning blew the game open. Four other Miners each recorded an RBI.

Joey Metropoulos hit his 31st homerun of the season in the thrid inning. His blast tied him with Jacob Dempsey of the Washington Wild Things for the Frontier League lead. It also tied him with Dempsey and Ian Church for second on the single season Frontier league home run charts.

Steve Spurgeon, and Jake McMurran combined for three innings of shutout ball to preserve the victory for the Miners.
