Washington Wild Things News Release

A strong outing by starter Chris Smith was not enough as the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, fell short against the Joliet Slammers, losing 3-1.

Smith went seven -plus innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks, while striking out three.

The Wild Things struck first in the top of the second inning. On a 1-0 count, center fielder Robbie Garvey hit a solo home run to right, giving the Wild Things an early 1-0 lead. It was Garvey's first home run and first RBI as a member of the Wild Things.

The Slammers started the bottom of the fourth inning with back to back singles. Smith battled back, getting second baseman Hector Pellot to ground into a fielder's choice, and designated hitter Erik Lis to ground into a double play, to end the threat.

Joliet got back to work in the bottom of the sixth. A one-out double by right fielder Jimmy Waters started the threat, which was followed by a single from catcher Ben Hewett. With runners at the corners, Hewitt was caught stealing, but Waters scored during the run down, tying the score at 1.

Joliet struck again in the bottom of the seventh. After a one-out walk to Lis, center fielder Zach Mandleblatt tripled to right field to drive in Lis. First baseman Kyle Maunus followed with a suicide squeeze that scored Mandelblatt from third. The Slammers finished with two runs in the inning, giving them a 3-1 lead.

Joliet's starter Michael Perconte pitched six innings, giving up one run on two hits and five walks while striking out five. Daniel Carela pitched a scoreless seventh inning, earning the win in his effort. Amalio Diaz added a scoreless ninth inning, earning the save.

The Wild Things face off against the Slammers again tomorrow at 3:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast on WJPA and www.msasports.net. The Wild Things return to CONSOL Energy Park Tuesday for a six game homestand. Tickets are available at the box office.
