Gateway Grizzlies News Release
SAUGET, Ill. - Gateway saw their modest three-game win streak snapped on Saturday night as the Beach Bums of Traverse City evened the series at a game apiece behind a 5-2 effort.
The Grizzlies (7-7) collected only two runs on four hits in front of 5,521 fans, while Traverse City (8-6) arm Reid Kelly (3-0) stunted nearly all of the home teams' production. Kelly tossed six full innings and allowed only two earned on four hits with five strikeouts.
Outfielder John Shelby headlined the few notables for the Grizzlies, batting 1-for-4 with a solo home run in the sixth inning. Jerod Yakubik contributed for the second straight night as well, tallying one hit in four appearances with an RBI.
On the mound true rookie and right-hander Jonathan Gonzalez (1-1) was dealt the loss in his four and one third frames of labor. The 23-year-old gave up three earned on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts in the 5-2 edging. Slider specialist Zach Treece applied solid two and two thirds of work in relief, allowing two runs on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
The Grizzlies will return to action tomorrow at 3:05 PM at GCS Ballpark to take part in the series decision against the slugging Beach Bums. Righty Pat Arnold will make his debut for the Grizzlies and will face Beach Bum lefty David Deminisky. Sunday afternoon will showcase the WIBI Family Faith Night and a concert by "The Great Romance" following the conclusion of play.
