Miners Defeat Boomers

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners defeated the Schaumburg Boomers 5-3 at Rent One Park. The Miners received good starting pitching from Thomas Campbell. Campbell, threw four innings, gave up three hits, no runs, walked one and struck out two.

The Miners got on board first in the bottom of the second as catcher Sean Coughlin hit his first home run of the year to give the Miners a 1-0 lead off Boomers starter Robbie Penny. The Miners came right back in the bottom of the fourth as DH Ken Gregory hit a two out, two run single to give the Miners a 3-0 lead.

After Boomers starter Robbie Penny left, Joe Parsons came in relief and the Miners got to him as well. In the bottom of the sixth, pinch hitting for Darian Sandford, Cannon Lester came through with a RBI double to give the Miners a 4-0 lead. However, the Boomers came right back in the top of the seventh off reliever Ian Campbell and scored two runs to close in on the Miners 4-2.

Matt Fields hit a RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to extend the lead for the Miners 5-2. Miners reliever Albert Ayala, who relieved Campbell with one out in the seventh, gave up a solo home run to Boomers 3B Frank Pfister to cut the lead to 5-3. Max Peterson though struck out the side in the top of the ninth after walking the lead-off runner to earn his fifth save of the season and preserve the Miners 5-3 lead.

The Miners improve to 9-5 on the season and look to sweep the series tomorrow as they send LHP Brian Fowler to the mound (1-0, 0.90 ERA). He'll be opposed by LHP Jose Rodriguez (1-0, 0.00 ERA). First pitch at Rent One Park is at 5:05 pm.
