Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

SAUGET, IL - The Traverse City Beach Bums got six strong innings out of starter Reid Kelly and Kyle Colligan delivered a three-hit game as the Beach Bums downed the Gateway Grizzlies 5-2 on Saturday evening.

Traverse City got things going in the second inning when Chris Kay hit his second homer in as many nights to give TC the initial tally of the contest. Gateway would respond in the bottom of the third on a single by Jerod Yakubik, plating Jon Myers to knot the score.

In the fourth, the Beach Bums took the lead for good as with runners on first and second, Ryan Still lined a ball into right-centerfield for a double, scoring Marcus Nidiffer for a 2-1 Traverse City advantage. The lead would be padded in the fifth when with Chase Burch on first, Jeff Flagg uncorked a no-doubter to left-center for his league leading seventh homer of the year and a 4-1 edge.

The two teams would trade runs in the sixth as Colligan had an RBI single for the Beach Bums that brought home Brian Heere and John Shelby homered in the bottom of the frame for the Grizzlies to create the final margin.

On the mound Kelly (3-0) was strong going six innings allowing two runs on four hits, striking out five. The right-hander ran into a bit of trouble in the third, loading the bases with one out, but finished with a flourish, retiring eight of the next nine batters and 11 of the final 14 he faced. Scott Dunn tossed two perfect innings striking out two and sent the game to Scott Mueller who pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save.

The rubber game of the series comes up on Sunday as David Deminsky (1-1, 7.90) starts for Traverse City against Patrick Arnold (0-0, 0.00) for Gateway. Coverage on Sunny Country 101.9 begins at 3:45 p.m. outside of a 4:05 scheduled first pitch.

The Beach Bums will return home on Tuesday, June 5 when they will take on the Rockford RiverHawks in a Two for Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. All chairback seats are 2-for-1 that night.
