Slammers Make Wild Things Walk the Plank on Pirate Night

Joliet Slammers News Release

(Joliet, IL)- The Slammers won their fifth straight game Saturday night at Silver Cross Field 3-1, and in the process took their third consecutive series.

In stark contrast to Friday's 15-2 blowout, Saturday was a pitcher's duel. Washington pulled ahead in the second inning when Robbie Garvey led off the inning with a solo homerun to take a 1-0 lead.

The game was scoreless from that point until the sixth inning. Brad Netzel struck out to lead off, but Jimmy Waters doubled soon after, and Ben Hewett followed with a single to put the runners on the corners. Hewett intentionally caught himself in a rundown between first and second, allowing Waters to score from third, trying the game at one.

The Slammers pulled ahead in the seventh. With a runner aboard, Zach Mandelblatt sent a low line drive into right, and Washington right fielder Mitch Denings dove and missed the ball, allowing Erik Lis to score from first. They added an insurance run on a successful suicide squeeze, the second of the season, bringing Mandelblatt home from third to make it 3-1.

In his second appearance of 2012, Michael Perconte again impressed, tossing six innings on just one run and striking out five. Daniel Carela earned the win, Brian Smith pitched setup in the eighth, and Amalio Diaz picked up his fourth save in five games.

The Slammers wrap up their series Sunday, going for their second straight series sweep. It's Cancer Survivors Day at Silver Cross Field in a 2:05pm start time. Fans can listen live on AM 1340 WJOL with Aaron Morse and Greg Talbott calling the action.
