Washington Wild Things News Release
WASHINGTON, Pa. - Right fielder Luis Rivera drove in the winning run in the eighth inning Sunday night to lift the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, over the Windy City ThunderBolts, 3-2.
Rivera's single broke a 2-2 tie, driving in Zack Stanton for the run that would prove to be the game winner.
Pitching was strong on both sides early in the game, with the first eleven batters being retired by both pitchers. Washington starter Vidal Nuno (2-1) had a strong outing, pitching eight innings, while allowing two runs (both earned) on six hits, with no walks and eight strikeouts.
Windy City starter Todd Privett (2-0) pitched six innings, allowing one run on five hits, walking one batter and striking out five. Reliever Wes Alsup (0-1) took the loss for the ThunderBolts, pitching one and two-thirds innings, allowing one hit, one run (earned), and walking one batter.
In the fifth inning, both Windy City and Washington scored to break up the pitching duel. The ThunderBolts scored two runs on two doubles hit by shortstop Chris Wade and right fielder Chase Porch. Both Wade and Porch were 1-for-3 at the plate, with one double and RBI each.
The Wild Things responded with a double hit by left fielder Derek Perren, which drove in catcher Blake Ochoa. Ochoa had an impressive showing at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double, one RBI and one walk. Ochoa later helped to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, when he hit a single deep into left field to drive in second baseman Scott Lawson.
Relief pitcher Taylor Wulf closed out the game for the Wild Things, earning his first save of the year. Wulf allowed no runs, no hits and struck out two ThunderBolts.
