Joliet Slammers News Release
JOLIET SLAMMERS (4-4) @ LAKE ERIE CRUSHERS (4-4)
Sunday, May 29 - 4:05 p.m. CST
All Pro Freight Stadium - Avon, OH Game #9- Road Game #6 (4-4, 2-3) RHP #33 ANDREW MOSS (0-1, 5.07 ERA) vs. RHP #36 JOSH ROBERTS (1-1, 8.10 ERA)
Last Time Out... Kellen Kulbacki singled to right field with two outs in the ninth inning to drive in the winning run as the Lake Erie Crushers (4-4) edged the Joliet Slammers (4-4) by a final score of 4-3 Saturday night. Devin Shepherd and Kris Kasarjian hit back-to-back RBI singles in the first inning to give Joliet a 2-0 lead. Lake Erie came roaring back with three runs in the fourth inning. A RBI single and a two-RBI triple made the score 3-2. But Bobby Leeper responded with his first professional home run as he tied things up with his solo shot in the fifth. The game would remain tied until the bottom of the ninth when Kulbacki delivered the crushing blow. Leeper and Josh Flores both recorded multi-hit games for the Slammers in the loss. The game marked the first time all year the bullpen has allowed a run as Jeremy Tietze (0-1) took the loss. Joliet remains one game out of first place in the East Division.
For Starters... The Cardinals made Andrew Moss their 35th round draft pick in 2009. The Lincoln University product has excelled at multiple levels in affiliated baseball. Moss' strikeout to walk ratio has been stellar, including 61 K's to only 23 BB's in 2010 with the low-A Batavia Muckdogs. He has a career 11-5 record with a 3.15 ERA in the minor leagues. He started 2011 with the Quad City River Bandits of the Midwest League before signing with the Slammers. In his first start he went 5.1 innings, giving up three runs in a loss to Windy City.
Pitching and Defense... The Joliet Slammers have the best ERA (2.60) and the best fielding percentage (.986) in the Frontier League. The defense has been key because the Slammers have only struck-out 34 batters, the fewest in the league. Joliet has yet to allow an unearned run this season, the only team in the league who can say that. The 23 walks issued by the Slammers' pitching staff is the second fewest in the league. Opponents are only hitting .210 against the Slammers, the lowest in the league.
Power surge... After not hitting a home run in their first six games, the Slammers exploded for three homers in Friday's win over Lake Erie. Then on Saturday they tacked on one more as Bobby Leeper hit his first professional home run. Erik Lis hit two dingers on Friday including the first in franchise history and Josh Flores smacked one as well that turned out to be the game winner.
Above average... Four Slammers batters are hitting over .300 on the year, led by Kris Kasarjian at .368. Josh Flores (.360), Hector Pellot (.348), and Bobby Leeper (.318) round out the .300 hitters.
Don't call it a comeback... Friday's win was the first time the Slammers have won a game when trailing after seven innings. They were 0-3 previously.
We're going streaking! Josh Flores has reached base in every game the Slammers have played. He's also working on a five-game hitting streak.
