Florence Y'alls News Release
The Freedom offense continued their scorching start to the season and Tim Holmes threw a complete game three-hitter en route to a 8-1 win against the River City Rascals Sunday night. The Freedom took the three-game series and improved to 5-4 on the season.
Tim Holmes started the game for the Freedom and was fantastic in his second start of the season. Holmes lost a perfect game to the first batter in the seventh, Chris McClendon. McClendon hit a fly ball 340 feet away, just over the 335 foot wall to put River City on the scoreboard.
That run came a little too late because the Freedom offense poured it on Rascals starting pitcher Sean Toler early and often. Florence scored first for the eighth time in nine games in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout by Chris Curley. Cole Miles came around to score for the second run of the third inning on Jimmy Baker's single to right field.
As Tim Holmes mowed through the top of the Rascals order the second time through, the Freedom came through with a six-run bottom of the fourth inning. Mark Samuelson led off with a single and that was followed by a single by Juan Valdes. Drew Rundle followed by driving in Samuelson with an RBI single. Jonathan Cisneros reached on an error by Toler, as he threw wide to third base. Junior Arrojo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to earn an RBI and make it a 3-0 Freedom lead.
With the bases loaded, Cole Miles grounded a ball to the shortstop Brian Harris, who threw to second for an attempted force out, but it was dropped by the second baseman Bobby Burk. Burk then threw home, but the throw was wide and resulted in the second error for Burk on the same play. The Freedom ended up batting around and scored six runs in the frame. Samuelson came back up in the fourth and struck out to end the inning. The Freedom had 13 hits on the night and all of them were singles.
Tim Holmes was cruising through six innings of work before allowing a fly ball that barely got out of the park to lead off the seventh. That home run was followed by a single by Chad Maddox, but the Rascals couldn't get any more runs on the board against Holmes.
The Freedom won the three-game series 2-1 and finished the homestand 2-4. They start a six-game roadtrip to Joliet and Windy City on Tuesday night at 8:05 ET. Preston Vancil (0-1, 7.59) will start his third game of the season.
