Washington Wild Things News Release

Avon, OH - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, fell to the Lake Erie Crushers by a score of 5-3 at All Pro Freight Stadium Tuesday night.

Washington had many opportunities to score during the game, but the Wild Things weren't able to take advantage of those opportunities. Washington left the bases load four times throughout the evening.

The Wild Things rallied late in the game, after falling behind 5-1, but it wasn't enough.

Washington's scoring came when Ryan Groth drove in Chris Sidick with an RBI double in the first inning, and then in the eighth inning when Chris Sidick walked, driving in a Matt Sutton run (Sidick set a franchise record and a league record with that plate appearance. The RBI gave him the Wild Things' record {breaking Mike Arbinger's} at 193 RBI, and he chalked up his 249th walk, setting a league record.).

In the ninth inning, Groth smacked a solo home run to bring Washington to within two runs of Lake Erie, but it wasn't enough.

Lake Erie also stranded players throughout the game but managed to score five runs including a solo home run by Andrew Davis in the third inning and a solo home run by Arden McWilliams in the seventh inning.

In the seventh inning Washington's veteran short stop Brett Grandstrand left the game injured.

Brian McCullough (5-5) took the loss for Washington, allowing four hits, two runs, striking out three and walking six. Chris Kupillas, Nick Peterson, and Rob Hedrick pitched in relief.

The Wild Things meet the Crushers for the game two of this three game set Wednesday night when first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Airtime on WJPA 95.3 F.M. is 6:55 p.m. The Wild Things return to Washington for their final homestand of the regular season September 1- 6. Tickets are available at the CONSOL Energy Park box office.
