Florence Y'alls News Release

YPSILANTI, MI - Needing to win out the rest of their games to keep a playoff birth alive, the Florence Freedom came up big twice Tuesday night against the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti with a double header sweep.

The Freedom clubbed three home runs in game one as they ran away with a 13-3 win.

Justin Pickett started the scoring with a three run homer, number 23 on the season, to put the Freedom up 3-0. Brad Hough scored on a wild pitch in the first to make it 4-0. Jay Johnson's followed with a solo shot, his fourth homer of the season, to make it 5-0 before Everett Saul even had to take the ball.

Saul (11-7) won his second straight to set the Freedom's franchise record for wins in a single season. The right-hander went six innings and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out six.

With the Freedom leading 7-1 in the fifth, the game was put out of reach as Florence put up six runs on four hits, punctuated by Billy Mottram's three-run homer to make it 13-1.

Florence used two more homers in game two on their way to a 4-1 win. Ryan Basham hit his thirteenth of the season in the first to make it 1-0.

Johnny Welch hit the furthest ball of the night to left for a no doubt two-run homer in the fourth. Tim Grogan added a two-out RBI double to put the Freedom up 4-0.

Ben Shivers started for Florence in game two and came two outs away from qualifying for the win in his first professional start. Shivers left with the Freedom up 4-1 in the fifth with the bases loaded and one out. Demetrius Banks came in and got the final two outs of the inning without allowing a run to score.

John Tesseyman got a big strikeout to end the sixth with two men in scoring position before Jonathan Miller earned his twelfth save of the season in the seventh. Banks (6-4) was awarded with the win after the left-hander went 1 1/3 innings.

Florence (43-42) jumped back over .500 with the win as the club has now won six straight, their longest winning streak of the season. Game three of the series against Midwest will be on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Freedom lead the season series 5-4 heading into Wednesday night's action.
