Grizzlies "walk" away with win
August 25, 2009 - Frontier League (FL)
Windy City ThunderBolts News Release
Windy City ThunderBolts pitching walked nine batters and hit three more, of which six scored, lifting the Gateway Grizzlies to a 9-8 win over the Bolts.
Gateway stormed out of the gates, scoring five first inning runs on a two run double from Joe Agreste and a bases clearing two-bagger from Peter Tountas. The ThunderBolts came right back in the bottom of the inning as with the help of an error, Windy City scored two runs on a J. T. Restko single and a Bryan Cook sac fly to pull to 5-2.
The game would remain that way until the bottom of the fourth inning when Vinnie Scarduzio doubled with two outs. Guillermo Martinez was hit by a pitch bringing up Gilberto Mejia who clocked a ringing double down the rightfield line to score both runners. Robert Perry came up and followed with the same, plating Mejia and tying the game at 5-5.
After that, Gateway would pull away again with three in the sixth as with the bases loaded, Brandon Peters grounded a ball that was misplayed at first base and bounced into rightfield, allowing all three runs to score. The Grizzlies would add one in the seventh. The Bolts mustered a run in the bottom of the sixth on a Perry RBI single to score Vinnie Scarduzio.
Windy City did not go down easily as the Bolts worked two runs across in the ninth on RBI singles from Kraig Binick and Nate Hall to cut the lead to 9-8, but Wiman was able to get Scarduzio for the final out of the game, preserving the win for Gateway.
Ricky Meinhold (3-2) took the loss for Windy City after subbing in for Carson Bryant in the second innings. Meinhold went 4.1 innings allowing three runs, only one of them earned, walking five and striking out five. Paige Dumont (5-4) got the win for the Grizzlies. Wiman notched his ninth save of the season.
The middle game of the series comes up on Wednesday with Matt Jernstad (5-4, 2.98) on the mound for Windy City against Nathan Melek (4-8, 6.12) for Gateway. Windy City will be hosting a bus trip to Rockford for the final regular season home game on Sept 6. Tickets for the trip are $60 and include transportation to and from the game, a sandwich from Jimmy John's and beverages on the bus.
