Bums Fall to Kings

Traverse City Beach Bums News Release


O'FALLON, Mo. - The Traverse City Beach Bums lost for the second consecutive contest on a walk-off hit, falling to the East Division leading Kalamazoo Kings 5-4.

The Beach Bums opened a 2-0 lead in the second inning. John Alonso and Andrew Franco singled on the first two pitches of the frame. Mike Victor was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Brian Lapin singled into right to score Alonso and get the Beach Bums started. The second run crossed after consecutive strikeouts when Kalamazoo starter Joe DiPietro unloaded a wild pitch to score Franco.

Kalamazoo was able to cut the lead in half when Josh Short homered to left in the bottom of the fourth. Short went deep after fouling a Jason Kiley pitch off his foot.

Single runs in the seventh and eighth innings pushed the advantage out to 4-1 for the Beach Bums. Brad Miller led off the seventh with a double was sacrificed to third and scored on an error. Robby Alcombrack and Jorge Araiza singled to start the eighth before Brad Miller drove in Araiza with a single to left.

The lead did not hold as Kalamazoo forced the first blown save of the season by the Traverse City pitching staff with three runs and some aggressive base running. Joe Ramos led off with a single and scored from second on a one-out single by Destan Makonnen, who moved to second on the throw. Amos Ramon singled in Makonnen and moved to second on the throw. Matt Maloney came through with his first hit as a member of the Kings, a single to right to plate the tying run.

The Kings won the game in the ninth. David Hurst retired the first two batter of the frame before Brendan Murphy singled. Pinch runner Scott Billak went to third when Destan Makonnen singled and scored the winning run on a basehit by Josh Short.

Traverse City totaled 14 hits in the game as all but one member of the order reached base. Jorge Araiza had three hits while Brian Lapin, Brad Miller, John Alonso, And Andrew Franco had two hits each.

The Beach Bums will continue the series tomorrow night with a 7:05pm contest. RHP Kevin Reese (7-6, 5.02) takes to the hill for the Beach Bums against converted reliever RHP Tommy Mejia (4-2, 3.96) for the Kings. The contest can be heard live on The Fox FM.
