Gateway Grizzlies News Release
CRESTWOOD, IL-The Gateway Grizzlies scored five times in the first inning Tuesday night and never trailed. They held on a 9-8 win over the Windy City ThunderBolts in game one of a three-game series at Standard Bank Stadium. The victory gives manager Phil Warren 150 wins in his career. He becomes the 14th manager in league history to achieve 150 wins.
The Grizzlies (35-49) wasted little time Tuesday night, jumping on Windy City starter Carson Bryant for five first-inning runs. Joe Agreste doubled to drive home a pair. Peter Tountas then added a bases-loaded double to put the Grizzlies up 5-0 after just one-half inning. Bryant lasted just the one inning.
Agreste finished 1-3. Tountas was 1-4.
Windy City (49-36) got two back in the bottom of the inning, thanks to a Grizzlies' error. The ThunderBolts tied it with three runs in the fourth on three hits against starter Paige Dumont. Dumont earned the win going six innings. He gave up six runs, four earned, on nine hits. He improves to 5-4 with the win.
The Grizzlies took the lead for good in the top of the sixth. This time it was Gateway who capitalized on an error. With the bases loaded and one out, Brandon Peters hit a hard ground ball to first, which got by Windy City first baseman J.T. Restko, allowing all three runners to score and put the Grizzlies up 8-5.
Trialing 9-6 going in the bottom of the ninth, Windy City pushed two runs across against closer Chris Wiman. Wiman struck out Vinnie Scarduzio to end the game with runners on first and second. Wiman struck out the side in the inning to earn his third save for the Grizzlies. It is his ninth save overall.
Former ThunderBolts Wilson Matos added a hit and an RBI for the Grizzlies. Alex Kerins had a pair of hits in the win.
The Grizzlies and ThunderBolts continue the series with a 7:05 game Wednesday night in Crestwood, Ill.
