Washington Wild Things News Release

Avon, OH- The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, fell to the Lake Erie Crushers in the first game of their nine-game road trip, 9-4.

The Wild Things jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Newly-signed rookie third baseman Taylor Oldham had his first professional hit to lead off the inning, and then scored his first professional run on a sacrifice fly to center field by shortstop Michael Mooney. Mooney went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs.

The Crushers responded by tying the game in the bottom of the second and then taking a 4-1 lead after the bottom of the fifth inning.

Washington would not be held down for long though, as they scored three runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game. After catcher Rick Devereaux and Oldham both reached base after being hit by pitches, a double by Eric Blackwell allowed both to score. Blackwell, a starting pitcher for Washington, played in right field for the contest. A single to right field by Mooney drove in the tying run for the Wild Things.

Unfortunately for the Wild Things, the Crushers' bats came alive again in the bottom of the sixth inning to score three runs and take a 7-4 lead. Lake Erie's defense did not allow the Wild Things to take advantage of key opportunities in the later innings.

Justin Hall spent five innings on the mound for the Wild Things and allowed four runs (all earned) on eight hits. Hall walked no batters and struck out six. Shawn Smith made his first relief appearance since being activated off the injured reserve list last week and pitched one inning, allowing no runs and one hit. Smith struck out one batter and walked one.

Lake Erie starting pitcher Joshua Rickards lasted 5 2/3 innings and allowed four earned runs on seven hits. Rickards struck out three batters. Reliever Randy Sturgill pitched the final 2 2/3 innings and allowed no runs on one hit. Sturgill struck out two batters.

The Wild Things take on the Crushers again tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. The pre-game show starts at 6:55 and fans can listen in at WJPA 95.3 FM or online at www.msasports.net.
