
Miners Lose Series Opener to Beach Bums

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners lost a tough one to the Traverse City Beach Bums 9-7 at Rent One Park. Miners starter Dave Harden struck out five batters in five innings. He gave up 12 hits and allowed six runs, five earned and walked one.
The Miners started with the bats early as Chad Maddox hit a two RBI double off Beach Bums starter Bennett Whitmore to give the Miners a 2-0 lead scoring Darian Sandford and Jake Kaase. The Traverse City Beach Bums answered right back off Miners starter Dave Harden when first baseman Chase Burch hit a two run home run to tie it at two in the top of the third inning.
Matt Fields hit a solo home run off Whitmore in the bottom of the fourth to give the Miners a 3-2 lead. The Beach Bums scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning to take the lead 6-2. Whitmore left the game after throwing five innings for the Beach Bums.
The Miners tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning by scoring three runs. Jake Kaase hit a RBI double to score Darian Sandford. Chad Maddox grounded out to move Kaase over to third. Matt Fields walked with two outs, the Carlos Mendez hit a base hit to bring in Jake Kaase. Fields scored on the play via an error by Beach Bums center fielder Kyle Colligan. With the game tied up at 6-6, the Miners took a one run lead when Darian Sandford hit a base hit and RBI off Beach Bums reliever Nick Capito to score catcher Sean Coughlin who was 3-3 on the night.
Miners reliever Ryan Quigley (0-2) pitched the seventh and eighth innings and gave up three runs in the top of the eighth inning. Beach Bums short stop Kyle Eveland hit a two run home run and first baseman Chase Burch had a RBI which gave the Beach Bums a 9-7 lead. Beach Bums closer Scott Mueller threw two innings to record his sixth save of the season.
Anthony Collazo and Albert Ayala each threw a scoreless inning in relief.
With the loss, the Miners fall to 14-8 on the season. The Miners and Beach Bums will get underway at Rent One Park tomorrow night at 7:05 pm.
