Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers scored nine times on 14 hits on Monday evening, as they snapped a four game losing streak, with a 9-4 victory over the Washington Wild Things at All Pro Freight Stadium.
The Crushers (8-14) snapped a five game losing streak at home with the victory, while the Wild Things (9-12) have now lost three out of their last four games.
Both teams scored single runs in the second. Michael Mooney's sacrifice fly drove in Taylor Oldham, who singled to start the second inning. Lake Erie answered in the bottom half, as Kellen Kulbacki belted his second solo homerun in as many days.
The Crushers received a big two-out single from Russ Moldenhauer in the bottom of the third to take the lead. Adrian Ortiz and Robbie Kuzdale roped back-to-back one out singles, and advanced on wild pitches, before scoring on Moldenhauer's single to right center field.
Brian Erie began the fifth inning with a base hit, and scored later in the inning on a wild pitch to cushion the Lake Erie lead. The Wild Things then rallied and plated a trio of runs in the sixth to tie things up. Eric Blackwell belted a two run double with two outs, and scored the tying run moments later on Mooney's base hit.
Lake Erie came right back with a three spot in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good. The inning began on Kulbacki's double, and he came home a few moments later on Erie's sacrifice fly. Ortiz added to the advantage with a run scoring double, and he touched home plate a few moments later on Kuzdale's second single of the game.
The Crushers added two more to pull more in the seventh inning to pull away. Brandon Decker brought Andrew Davis home on a sacrifice fly and Wally Correa belted a two out base hit to score Moldenhauer.
Kelyn Schellenberg (1-1) tossed two thirds of an inning, recording the final out in the sixth, and the first out in the seventh to score the victory, while Randy Sturgill (1) scored his first save of the season, going two and two-thirds, allowing no runs on a hit with two strikeouts. Steven Grife (0-1) allowed a pair of runs on a hit over two thirds of an inning and was tagged with the loss.
