Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
MARION, IL - The Traverse City Beach Bums scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning as the Beach Bums downed the Southern Illinois Miners 9-7 in a wild game from Rent One Park.
Trailing 7-6 heading into the eighth inning, Sean Gusrang got things started for the Beach Bums with a triple to rightfield. Kyle Eveland came up next and took a 1-1 pitch from Ryan Quigley over the leftfield fence for his first homerun of the season to put TC up 8-7. Not done there, Ryan Still singled, was sacrificed to second by Kyle Colligan and came into score on a Chase Burch single to make it 9-7.
For Burch it was his 208th hit in a Traverse City uniform, tying him with Matt Brown for second place on the Beach Bums all-time hit list.
The three runs for Traverse City culminated a see-saw game in which the teams traded leads regularly. Southern Illinois got the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning on a double by Chad Maddox to make it 2-0. The Beach Bums responded in the third on Burch's fourth homer of the year, a two-run shot to tie it at 2-2. Matt Fields hit his league-leading ninth homerun of the season in the fourth to make it 3-2 Miners
Traverse City would get the run back and then some in the top of the fifth as Traverse City would score four runs. Brian Heere led off with a triple and was brought home by a Colligan triple to tie the game. Two batters later, Jeff Flagg bounced a ground-rule double over the fence in center for a 4-3 Beach Bums lead. Back-to-back singles by Jose Vargas and Marcus Nidiffer would score Flagg and Vargas and put TC up 6-3.
Southern Illinois came right back though and scored three in the bottom of the inning to tie the game and then plated a run in the sixth on a Darien Sandford single to take the late lead and set up the end of game rally.
Jason Matilla (1-0) earned his first professional win with a scoreless seventh inning. Scott Mueller went two scoreless frames for his sixth save of the year. Ryan Quigley (0-2) took the loss for the Miners
Game two of the series comes up on Tuesday with Jacob Clem (1-2, 2.33) on the mound for Traverse City against Darrin Tew (0-0, 3.68) for Southern Illinois. Coverage on Sunny Country 101.9 will begin at 7:45 p.m. outside of an 8:05 first pitch.
