Joliet Slammers News Release

(Joliet, IL)- The Schaumburg Boomers won their first regular season contest against the Slammers at Silver Cross Field on Monday 5-3.

After stranding two runners in scoring position in the first, Schaumburg got the scoring started in the second when Nate Baumann led off with a solo home run to straightaway center field.

The Boomers led by a run until the fifth, when they extended their lead, again on the long ball. With one away in the inning, catcher Mike Valadez and second baseman Drew Heithoff singled back-to-back, and Gerard Hall gave them the 4-0 lead on a three-run homer.

Joliet got on the board in the next inning. Abel Nieves and Hector Pellot reached scoring position with no outs, but Nieves was caught trying to reach home on a wild pitch. However, Pellot advanced to third on the play, and eventually came around on another wild pitch later in the inning, making it 4-1.

Schaumburg scored again in the eighth when Hall walked and reached second on a groundout from Nick Kuroczko and came around to score when Frank Pfister doubled to retake a four-run advantage.

In typical dramatic fashion, the Slammers mounted a two-out rally in the ninth inning. With Hector Pellot on third base after a single, he put the game within three, scoring when Schaumburg committed an error in the field. David Fox kept the team moving when he singled to bring home Erik Lis, but pinch hitter Zach Mandelblatt grounded out to end the ballgame.

Joliet missed opportunities on base multiple times in the game, grounding into two double plays and stranding 13 total runners. The Slammers outhit the Boomers 11-7, but just couldn't produce with runners in scoring position.

Despite giving up a pair of home runs and getting stuck with the loss, Steven Maxwell only gave up five hits through seven innings of work before Geoff Brown and Amalio Diaz came in to finish the job. Cameron Roth earned the win for the Boomers.

Joliet plays game two of the homestand Tuesday at Silver Cross Field in another 7:05 start with Schaumburg. Tuesday is also Superhero Night at the ballpark, where fans can also find great deals on hot dogs and sodas for just one dollar each. Fans can listen live on AM 1340 WJOL with Aaron Morse and Greg Talbott calling the action, online at www.wjol.com.
