Geneva, Illinois - The Kane County Cougars fell to the Quad Cities River Bandits, 10-5, on Wednesday afternoon at Northwestern Medicine Field.
Both starting pitchers dueled early. Cougars starter Mack Lemiuex tossed four shutout innings before allowing the lone run of his outing on an RBI fielder's choice to Jake Meyers in the fifth inning. Lemieux was pulled after the sixth, taking no decision. Bandits starter Patrick Sandoval threw five shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out seven, also taking no decision.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Cougars struck for five runs. Will Gorman laced a bases-clearing triple to give the Cougars a 3-1 advantage. The next batter, Eudy Ramos, tripled to drive in Gorman. Ernie De La Trinidad roped an RBI single to score Ramos and make It 5-1 Cougars.
In the top of the seventh, Adrian Tovalin led off the inning with a homer. Marcos Almonte collected an RBI with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to cut the Cougar lead to 5-3. Two batters later, with two outs in the inning, Jonathan Arauz drove in a pair of runs with a triple to tie the game. After Michael Papierski walked, a shallow fly ball to right field off the bat of Bryan De La Cruz found green grass, driving in both Arauz and Papierski. In the eighth inning, Jake Adams hit a solo homer and Arauz hit another two-RBI triple to expand the Bandits lead to 10-5.
Lemieux finished his outing after six innings, allowing one runs on five hits and four strikeouts with no walks. Abraham Almonte (0-1) took the loss, lasting just 0.2 innings and giving up five runs. Breckin Williams surrendered four runs in his lone inning on the bump. Jordan Watson recorded the final four outs for the Cougars, allowing just one hit.
Cesar Rosado (1-1) earned the win despite allowing five runs on six hits over 2.2 innings. Carlos Sanabra tossed 1.1 innings of shutout ball.
The Cougars close out the four-game series with Quad Cities Thursday night. The Cougars will send right-hander Brian Shaffer (0-1, 4.61) to the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Buy tickets by calling 630-232-8811 or on kccougars.com.
