Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels dropped a 7-2 decision to the Burlington Bees Wednesday evening at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Burlington also secured a 2-1 lead in this four-game series with the win.
The Bees (9-8) jumped out to a 1-0 during the second inning. Cedar Rapids (8-5) denied Burlington early in the frame when Akil Baddoo started an 8-6-2 relay that prevented Keinner Pina from scoring on a Franklin Torres double. The Bees followed by loading the bases for Leonardo Rivas, who hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Torres.
Burlington also scored in the fourth and fifth innings to increase its lead to 4-0. Torii Hunter Jr. produced an RBI single prior to a bases-loaded walk by Spencer Griffin. In the fifth, Julio Garcia scored from third base on a balk.
The Kernels answered in the sixth inning, but the Bees added a response of their own within the seventh for a 7-1 lead. Cedar Rapids scratched the scoreboard with back-to-back doubles from Jose Miranda and Alex Kirilloff. Piña opened a three-run seventh-inning rally with an RBI triple and scored on a single by Torres. Gleyvin Pineda later drove in Torres on a groundball back to the mound.
Cedar Rapids scored the game's final run during the eighth without the benefit of a hit. Andrew Bechtold drew a one-out walk and reached third base on a throwing error off a groundball by Ben Rortvedt. Bechtold scored on a wild pitch to trim the Kernels' deficit to 7-2.
Sam Pastrone (2-0) was the winning pitcher Wednesday while Tyler Watson (1-1) was charged with the loss. Pastrone allowed two runs - one earned - over four innings of work. Watson yielded three runs over 3.2 frames but also produced six strikeouts. Also, Kernels reliever Derek Molina struck out six consecutive batters over the eighth and ninth innings. He recorded 2.2 scoreless innings and stranded three inherited runners.
