Dayton Dragons News Release
Lansing, Mich.-Kevin Smith collected three doubles and drove in two runs to lead the Lansing Lugnuts to a 13-2 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Wednesday night. The Lugnuts have won the first three games of the series as they handed the Dragons their fifth straight loss.
It has been a streaky start to the season for the Dragons. They opened the year by losing their first three games, then won nine in a row before beginning the current losing streak.
For the third straight night, the Dragons fell behind in the first inning. Lansing scored two runs in the first, added two more in the third, and then took a commanding lead with four runs in the fourth to lead 8-0. The Dragons trailed 10-0 before scoring for the first time in the sixth inning.
The Dayton nine-hit attack was led by John Sansone, who was 3 for 4 with a triple and a run batted in. Jeter Downs had two hits with a run scored and a stolen base.
Dragons starting pitcher Mac Sceroler (1-2) suffered the loss. He worked four innings, allowing eight runs (only three earned) on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts. The Dragons bullpen struggled in relief of Sceroler. Dauri Moreta pitched one inning and allowed two runs as he gave up two walks, a hit batsman, and one hit. Connor Ryan surrendered his first runs of the season, working one inning and allowing three runs on five hits. Cory Thompson pitched a scoreless inning before backup catcher Morgan Lofstrom was called upon to pitch the final inning. Lofstrom walked the first two batters of the inning but retired the side without allowing a hit or run.
Lansing, the Midwest League leader in runs scored, has outscored the Dragons 30-9 in the first three games of the series. Lansing has scored at least 10 runs in five of their 18 games.
The loss dropped the Dragons to 9-8. They fell to fourth place as Lansing took over the top position in the Midwest League East Division with a 12-6 record. Lansing is two and one-half games ahead of the Dragons. Dayton is 8-1 at home this season, but 1-7 on the road. They are 1-5 on their current seven-game road trip.
Up Next: The Dragons and Lugnuts close out the four-game series on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Tyler Mondile (0-2, 9.00) will start for Dayton against Lansing's Graham Spraker (0-0, 2.53).
The next Dragons home game is Friday, April 27 against Fort Wayne. The scheduled Dayton starters for the three games against Fort Wayne are Wendolyn Bautista on Friday, Hunter Greene on Saturday, and Packy Naughton on Sunday.
