West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
EASTLAKE, OH - The West Michigan Whitecaps were no-hit and gave up five home runs to the Lake County Captains in losing both games of a doubleheader by scores of 4-0 and 6-3 on Wednesday night at Classic Park.
The Game 1 no-hitter was completed by a duo of Captains pitchers in Francisco Perez and reliever James Karinchak and was the first by Lake County since 2011. The Whitecaps have now scored only six runs in their last four games.
Perez walked six batters in a start that lasted 6.1 innings before giving way to Karinchak who retired the only two hitters he faced. Perez (1-0) struck out four in earning his first win, while Karinchak earned his first save. At the plate, the Captains hit three home runs, with two towering shots coming from Will Benson, the Cleveland Indians first-round pick in 2016 in Game 1. Garett King (0-1) gave up four runs in five innings in suffering his first loss for the Whitecaps.
In the nightcap, Brady Policelli helped give West Michigan a 3-0 lead with a two-run single before the bats went silent for the remainder of the evening. Lake County connected for two more home runs - this time by Nolan Jones and Austen Wade to rally from their three-run deficit to take a 6-3 victory in Game 2. Domingo Jimenez (3-0) tossed 3.1 scoreless innings in relief to earn his third win, while Whitecaps starter Elvin Rodriguez (1-1) took his first loss after giving up five runs in just 3.2 innings. Jonathan Teaney worked a perfect final inning to earn his second save.
