Kansas City Monarchs News Release
GARY, Ind. - Just when it looked as if Tuesday afternoon's game could be headed for extra innings, a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the ninth brought home the winning run as Kansas City lost to Gary SouthShore, 4-3.
With a 3-3 tie heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, Kansas City's Chad Robinson (0-1) struck out Ryan Babineau for the second out, but a wild pitch to Adam Klein brought in Drew Martinez from third base. It's the sixth consecutive win for the RailCats.
Kansas City started the scoring in the third inning when Jeff Squier hit a two-out triple and Justin Bass countered with an RBI double that gave the T-Bones a 1-0 lead. That lead evaporated in the bottom of the fourth inning when Mike Massaro hit an RBI double that scored Klein.
In the eighth, trailing 3-2, Justin Bass led off the inning with a double for Kansas City. He left after the play, however, because of a hamstring injury. Ethan Cole, running for Bass, scored three batters later on Matt Padgett's sacrifice fly.
Kansas City starting pitcher Lucas Irvine, who got a no decision, was perfect through three innings. He left in the seventh inning without retiring a batter. In the game, Irvine allowed three runs on five hits and struck out six.
RailCats reliever Clay Zavada (5-1) pitched a scoreless top of the ninth inning for Gary SouthShore (22-15).
