Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Sox exploded with four runs in the eighth at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium to notch their eleventh win against El Paso this season. Amarillo beat the Diablos 10-4 in front of 2,042 in attendance. The game lasted three hours in Jason Johnson's third win on the year.
Johnson did not give up a hit through the first three innings and then El Paso broke the scoreless tie in the fourth with a single by Brain Joynt that brought in Jose Garcia. Garcia had stolen second to get in scoring position. But the Sox took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half with hits from David Peralta and Chris Grossman as well as an error by Diablo second baseman, Garcia. The Diablos and the Sox both went down in order during the fifth before scoring resumed.
El Paso stole the lead back in sixth; 3-2 with another run batted in for Joynt and an RBI double for Thomas McAlpine. In the home half, the Sox started with singles from Chris Valencia and Joe Weik. Peralta was hit by a pitch so the bases were loaded. Cory Patton shot a double over the center fielder's head to drive in two runs give Amarillo the lead again. The score after six was 6-3.
Maikol Gonzalez led off the seventh with a double, stole second, and would score off a Garcia single to left. Johnson got the next batter out and would leave the game with seven innings pitched. Josh Giles maintained the Sox two-run lead after walking the first batter of the eighth. Giles had the help of a double play and a strikeout in the inning. The Sox scored four runs in the bottom half to further their lead. David Peralta hit a homerun to right to start the inning and then four batters later, Trey Ford hit a two-run bomb to left. Both long balls came off reliever Chandler Barnard who lasted just a third of an inning.
Jason Johnson (W, 3-1) allowed four runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out five. Kevin Brahney (L, 0-3) went five innings and gave up six runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Marshall Schuler cleaned up the sixth for Brahney and pitched the entire seventh, allowing no hits and retiring all six batters faced. Schuler had two strikeouts. Moises Montero recorded the last two outs in the eighth for the Diablos, allowing one hit. For the Sox, Erik Draxton struck out three batters and walked one during the ninth.
With the win, the Sox improve to 23-14, while the Diablos fall to 10-28 on the season. Wednesday, the Sox host the El Paso Diablos for the fourth of a five-game set.
