Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (25-14) beat the Laredo Lemurs (22-16) 10-2 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Tuesday night.
For a second straight night, the Wingnuts used a big first inning to take early control of the game. Ryan Khoury led off with an infield single behind the third base bag and went to second on a hit-and-run single to left from Abel Nieves. On the next pitch, John Rodriguez crushed a three-run home run off the middle of the videoboard in left-center field. After Brent Clevlen flied out to deep center, a walk to C.J. Ziegler and back-to-back singles from Cole Armstrong and Colt Loehrs loaded the bases with one out. David Amberson came back from an 0-2 count to draw a walk and force home Ziegler with the Wingnuts' fourth run. Jared McDonald made it 5-0 when he beat out a potential double play groundball to third base.
Laredo scratched out a run in the top of the fourth against Wingnuts' starter Justin Klipp. Brian Peterson doubled to center field leading off and scored on consecutive groundballs from Garrett Buechele and Jimmy Mojica.
Clevlen responded in the bottom of the fourth with a long, solo home run that struck the top of the scoreboard in left-center.
John Allen doubled leading off the top of the fourth and scored two batters later on Palmer Karr Jr's groundout to shortstop.
The Wingnuts responded again in the bottom half with four runs to break the game open. Amberson homered on a high flyball to left field to make it 7-2. After Lemurs' starter Fernando Hernandez retired the next two hitters, a walk to Nieves and a single from Rodriguez set up a two-out, two-run double to center from Ziegler that extended the lead to 9-2. Clevlen drove in Wichita's final run with a line drive single to left-center.
Klipp earned the win, allowing two earned runs on six hits over seven innings. Klipp walked one and struck out six.
Hernandez took the loss, allowing 10 earned runs on 13 hits in five innings. Hernandez walked four and struck out two.
Ben Graham and Daniel Bennett each worked a scoreless inning of relief to close out the game. Nieves finished with four hits and extended his hitting streak to 18 games, two shy of the Wingnuts' team record.
Graham was signed prior to the game. The right-hander is in his third stint with the Wingnuts and played college baseball at Emporia State University. Graham made his professional debut for the Wingnuts in 2010 before having his contract purchased by the Washington Nationals' organization. The 25-year-old returned to Wichita at the beginning of 2012 before having his season cut short last June due to injury.
