March 17, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Iowa Wild News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Wild, in a partnership with the American Heart Association of Central Iowa, will be hosting a silent auction this Saturday, benefiting the AHA.
The partnership is focused on raising awareness and funds for the AHA through the jersey auction and urging fans to sign up for the AHA Des Moines Heart Walk on June 13th. Fans will have the opportunity to bid on the specialty warm-up jerseys this Saturday, when Iowa hosts Charlotte at 7 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena. The team began wearing the jerseys in January and will continue to don them the rest of the regular season. Once the season comes to a close, fans will be awarded their jerseys. The bidding for the auction will take place on the concourse of Wells Fargo Arena and will close at the start of the third period. Fans are given a "buy it now" option of $750 per jersey to ensure the player of their choice. Jersey winners will also have the unique option of fundraising via their Heart Walk page under the Iowa Wild team until June 13th to offset the bid on their jersey. For more information fans may visit iowawild.com.
"Heart disease is something that affects all of us, as Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the leading killers among all Americans", said Iowa Wild President Todd Frederickson. "Our fans have always been our best teammates when it comes to fighting an important cause. The American Heart Association is a great partner and we look forward to our fans walking with us in June."
In addition, any fan that signs up for the Heart Walk on June 13th and raises at least $15 receives an Iowa Wild Heart Walk T-Shirt. Fans may sign up at http://heartwalk.kintera.org/desmoines/iowawild.
Over the past 50 years, significant progress has been made in the battle against heart disease, stroke, and other forms of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Improved diagnosis and treatment have been remarkable - as has the survival rate. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), 1.6 million lives have been saved since 1977 that otherwise would have been lost to heart disease and stroke. An estimated 44% of the decrease in heart disease deaths from 1980-2000 was a result of prevention through the reduction of risk factors.
CVD remains the No. 1 and most costly killer in the U.S. and a major cause of disability. Beyond the toll in suffering and death, it comes with a steep price tag. CVD will cost the U.S. a projected $503 billion in medical expenses (direct costs) and lost productivity (indirect costs) in 2010.
