Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Calgary, AB - Edmonton Oil Kings Assistant GM Randy Hansch announced today the Oil Kings have selected goaltender Patrick Dea [Day] of the St.Albert Bantam AAA Sabres of the AMBHL with the 22nd pick of the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft. Dea was the 2012 AMBHL North Outstanding Goaltender of the year and selected as an allstar in last week's Alberta Cup tournament in Lethbridge. Dea played 1237 minutes for the Sabres and posted a 12-6-3 record with a 2.96 GAA and a 0.920 save percentage. Dea was the first goaltender selected in this year's draft.

"Patrick Dea a very talented goaltender that we were happy to select at the positon we were drafting." said Hansch "He's an athletic goaltender who is consistent, constantly competes and challenges the opposition. When you combine all that he gives his team a chance to win every night"

The Oil Kings then made some moves in the second round as they traded up for Moose Jaw's second round pick at the 40 spot. Edmonton then used this pick to select forward Andrew Koep [Kepp]. Koep is a 5'7, 140 pound centre who played last season with the Lloydminster Bantam AAA Heat of the AMBHL. He totaled 41 goals 20 assists and 61 points with 52 PIMS in 31 games.

"Andrew Koep is a talented forward who isn't one dimensional" said Hansch "He scores in all areas of the ice, is willing pay the price to get to those areas and is an honest player with very good skill."

Edmonton did not make a selection in the third round of the draft as this pick was traded to Everett as a part of the trade for Tyler Maxwell. The Oil Kings then selected big defenceman Jesse Mills with the 88th pick of the draft. Mills is a 6'4 188 pound d-man who played last season with Westside Bantam Tier 2 in Westside, BC.

The WHL Bantam Draft is the first opportunity for WHL Clubs to replenish their systems with graduating Bantam-aged players. The order of selection for the first round of the draft is determined through a weighted lottery consisting of the six non-playoff teams. The draft order is based on the inverse overall standings from the regular season.

The 2012 WHL Bantam Draft saw the Seattle Thunderbirds select Burnaby product Mathew Barzal first overall. This marks the first time in franchise history that the Thunderbirds made the first overall pick in the WHL Bantam Draft.

Players eligible for the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft included 1997-born players who reside in Alberta, B.C., Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, Yukon, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
