Prince Albert SK - The Prince Albert Raiders were busy at the at the 2012 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft today in Calgary, Alberta, selecting 4 forwards, 4 defenceman and a goaltender, while adding a veteran goaltender via trade.

The Raiders started the day with the 2nd overall selection, but traded the draft pick to the Prince George Cougars for Prince George's first pick, 3rd overall, and 3rd round pick in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft. With the 3rd overall pick, Prince Albert took 6'1" 165-pound defenceman Brendan Guhle of the Sherwood Park Kings Athletic Club.

Dale Derkatch on Brendan Guhle: "He is a very good skater who competes hard. He has a lot of skill and the size to go with it."

With their 2nd round pick, the Raiders took goaltender Nick McBride of Maple Ridge, BC. The 6'2, 160 pound net minder backstopped the Burnaby Winter Club to a Western Canadian Bantam Championship this year, and was named as the tournament's top goaltender.

Dale Derkatch on Nick McBride: "Nick was a highly touted player and is arguably the best goalie in the draft. He has really good size and skill, and is a proven winner."

The Raiders had another pick in the 2nd round, and used the 41st overall selection to take left-winger Matteo Gennaro, the leading scorer of the St. Albert Bantam AAA Sabres this season.

Dale Derkatch on Matteo Gennaro: Matteo is a great all around player with good skill. He is a captain type player with a work ethic that is second to none."

The Raiders selected Saskatoon native Connor Hobbs with their 4th pick, 67th overall. The Saskatoon Bandits defenceman put up 18 points in 19 games and was named a First Team All-Star in the Greater Saskatoon Hockey League Bantam AA Tournament.

Dale Derkatch on Connor Hobbs: "It was good to get a local Saskatchewan guy. He is a solid defensive defenceman with some offensive upside. He has a great stick, makes a good first past and plays with a physical edge."

The Raiders followed up their 4th round selections by acquiring 20-year-old goaltender Luke Siemens from the Moose Jaw Warriors in exchange for their additional 4th round pick and their 3rd round selection in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft. Last season, Siemens posted a 2.56 goals against average and a .907 save percentage with 4 shutouts en route to a 35-14-4-1 record and an East Division title.

With their 89th overall choice, in the 5th round, the Raiders drafted 6'1" defenceman Jordan Boulton of the Sherwood Park Bantam AAA Flyers. The blueliner, recorded 9 points in 32 games, while collecting 18 penalty minutes.

Dale Derkatch on Jordan Stewart: "Jordan is a good skater with size. He makes a good first pass and is very good in his own zone."

Sitting in the 99th position, the team selected centre Dylan Stewart of the Edmonton Canadian Athletic Club. Stewart led his team in goals, with 33 in just 32 games, and totaled 50 points this season.

Dale Derkatch on Dylan Stewart: "A hard working, smart and captain type player. He plays hard and isn't afraid of going into the dirty areas."

Opening the 6th round of the draft, the Raiders took left-winger Dallas Miller, a 6'0, 170-pound Winnipeg product 111th overall.

Dale Derkatch on Dallas Miller: "Dallas has played a lot as an underage player in minor hockey, consistently playing against players older than him. He is a big strong power forward, good skater and can be a very good second line player in the future."

The Raiders drafted defenceman Marshall Burr from Airdrie Xtreme Bantam AAA in the 8th round, 155th overall. The 6'1" rearguard registered 13 points to go with 76 penalty minutes in 27 games in the 2011-2012 season.

Dale Derkatch on Marshall Burr: "A big, steady and rugged stay at home defenceman. Marshall is a good skater with a physical presence on the ice," said Derkatch.

In the 9th round, the Raiders drafted Choiceland, Saskatchewan's Caleb Seaman. Playing for the North East Wolfpack this season, the 6'0, 160 pound forward scored 13 goals and added 9 helpers for 22 points in just 19 games played in the Saskatchewan Bantam AA Hockey League.

Dale Derkatch on Caleb Seaman: "A big body player that plays a physical style. The type of guy you need with a physical edge.
