Whitecaps Sweep LumberKings

West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps led from start to finish as they completed a three-game sweep with a win over the Clinton LumberKings 9-3 Thursday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.

West Michigan scored early and often in the contest, thanks to an RBI-single by Christin Stewart and a two-run double by Rashad Brown to give the 'Caps a 4-0 advantage. The LumberKings sliced the lead to 4-3 when two runs scored on a wild pitch by starting pitcher Spencer Turnbull, and an error by Kade Scivicque, who thought time had been called by home plate umpire JC Velez-Morales and accidentally flipped Turnbull's wild pitch to a bat boy near his own dugout. In the seventh, the Whitecaps would put the game out of reach by sending 10 batters to the plate with a five-run inning. Mike Gerber launched a solo home run, David Gonzalez ripped a two-run single into center and Brown blooped a double down the left field line to score a run to cap the frame.

Spencer Turnbull (9-3) pitched five innings allowing three runs in earning his ninth win of the season, while Clinton starter Jarrett Brown (1-6) suffered his sixth loss allowing four runs through five innings of work. The Whitecaps record improves to 22-17 in the second half, bringing their overall record to 55-53. Clinton falls to 8-32 this half, with a combined record of 34-75. Brown and Gerber each led the Whitecaps with three hits in the contest.
