Chiefs Win Pitchers' Duel, Sweep Captains

Peoria, IL-Tied in the eighth inning, the Peoria Chiefs got four walks to force in a run en route to a 2-1 victory over the Lake County Captains Thursday night. The win, Peoria's eighth straight at home, improves the Chiefs to 60-48 on the season and 27-13 for the second half with three games remaining on the current homestand.

The game was scoreless through 3 ½ innings before the Chiefs got on the board in the bottom of the fourth against Captains starter Justus Sheffield. Harrison Bader led off with an infield single and moved to third on a single by Alex DeLeon. Bader scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Nick Thompson to give the Chiefs a 1-0 advantage.

The Captains evened the score in the sixth against Chiefs starter Jack Flaherty. Taylor Murphy led off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Murphy scored on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Bradley to tie the score 1-1.

The Chiefs took the lead in the eighth against Captains reliever Cameron Hill. Andrew Sohn led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice but by Darren Seferina. Bader and Alex DeLeon drew walks to load the bases, and Sohn scored when Thompson drew a walk for the 2-1 Chiefs lead.

Flaherty started and took a no-decision, going six innings and allowing one run on five hits and two walks, striking out a career-high 12. Nick Lomascolo (2-1) got the win, working two scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out two. Kyle Grana pitched a perfect ninth to earn his team-leading 17th save, striking out one.

Notes: The 12 strikeouts for Flaherty were the second most by a pitcher in a single game in Dozer Park history, and set a new career-high for Flaherty, the record is 14 set by Starling Peralta August 7, 2012...Kerry Wood (2006) and Rich Hill (2005) are the only other Chiefs pitchers to strike out 12 in stadium history...Flaherty has pitched at least six innings in four of his last five starts...Chiefs starters have gone at least five innings in eight straight contests...Thompson drove in both Chiefs runs for his 12th multi-RBI game of the season...Grana is third in the Midwest League with 40 appearances...He is tied for 13th in Chiefs franchise history with 17 saves in a single season...The Chiefs are 14-10 this season in one-run games and 48-21 when allowing four runs or less...Peoria has won eight straight home games and is 6-4 in Thursday home games...The Chiefs continue their home stand when they begin a three-game series Friday night at 7:00 against Fort Wayne...The pitching matchup features Peoria RH Matt Pearce (7-9, 2.94) against Fort Wayne RH Dinelson Lamet (3-5, 3.58)...It will be another post-game fireworks night with a Central State Fireworks presentation following the game...Friday is also Superhero Night at Dozer Park, with special appearances by Captain America and Iron Man...Friday is also another player canvas giveaway, with the first 1,000 fans receiving an Albert Pujols player canvas...The broadcast can be heard, starting with the Pre-Game Show at 6:45 p.m., on  www.peoriachiefs.com/listenlive which also has downloads for a free app on the iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Android...The broadcast is also available on the Peoria Chiefs Network in the MiLB Inside the Park and Tune-In Radio Apps.
