Whitecaps Fight Back in 5-4 Win

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps battled back from a three-run deficit, and then hung on late to defeat the Clinton LumberKings 5-4 Wednesday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.

The LumberKings took a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning when Estarlyn Morales drove in a run with a single, but West Michigan answered with three of their own in the bottom of the inning on RBI-singles by Rashad Brown, Mike Gerber and Kade Scivicque. An inning later, Will Kengor; who launched a game-winning home run a night earlier, ripped a go-ahead double down the left-field line to score Joey Pankake and give the 'Caps a 4-3 lead. Ross Kivett added an important insurance run with a base hit later in the frame. In the ninth, Dominic Moreno gave up three straight two-out singles, including a run-scoring hit from former Whitecap Pat Leyland before striking out Morales to stand the tying run at third and end the ballgame.

Gabe Speier (4-2) picked up his fourth win with the Whitecaps for tossing two innings of scoreless baseball while striking out a pair. Hawtin Buchanan (0-3) gave up two runs in an inning of relief in taking his third loss of 2015. Moreno finished the contest and earned his second save. The Whitecaps record improves to 21-17 in the second half, bringing their overall record to 54-53. Clinton falls to 8-32 this half, with a combined record of 34-75. Brown led the Whitecaps with two hits and reached base in all five of his plate appearances.

The Whitecaps conclude this three-game series against the Clinton LumberKings with Altogas Thrifty Thursday at 7pm.
