Dayton Dragons News Release

Cedar Rapids, Iowa-Nick Gordon's run-scoring single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning brought in the winning run from third base as the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Dayton Dragons 5-4. The Kernels scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth after the Dragons had broken a 3-3 tie with a run in the top of the ninth. The Kernels took two-of-three in the series.

The score was tied 3-3 after eighth innings when Dayton's Chadwick Tromp began the ninth with a double to left-center field. Two batters later, Tromp scored from third on Gavin LaValley's two-out single to give the Dragons a 4-3 lead.

But Cedar Rapids scored twice in the bottom of the ninth for the win. Gordon's game-winning hit came with two outs and runners at second and third.

The Kernels ninth inning rally began with a lead-off single by Rafael Valera, who advanced to second on an error by Dragons center fielder Jonathan Reynoso on the play. Valera advanced to third on a ground out to second base and scored on a grounder to the left side of the infield, beating the tag at the plate after Dayton shortstop Luis Gonzalez made a backhanded stop of the ball and threw home. Valera's run tied the game at 4-4. Two batters later, Gordon, the fifth pick of the 2015 draft who was getting the night off, came to the plate as a pinch hitter and delivered the hit to end the game.

The Dragons collected 13 hits on the night. LaValley was 3 for 5 with two runs batted in to lead the offense.

Dragons starting pitcher Junior Morillo suffered through his third straight rough outing but was not involved in the decision. He lasted three and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Reliever Jeremy Kivel was outstanding in relief of Morillo, working four and one-third scoreless innings. Conor Krauss (2-2) was charged with both runs in the ninth and took the loss. The game-winning came against Brennan Bernardino, who replaced Krauss to face Gordon.

The Dragons jumped out to a quick lead, scoring two runs in the first inning. Cory Thompson doubled down the left field line to start the game and eventually scored on LaValley's single through the middle. Reynoso added a two-out infield single to bring in Argenis Aldazoro from third to make it 2-0.

Cedar Rapids scored single runs in the first, second, and third innings to take a 3-2 lead. The Dragons tied the game 3-3 in the fifth when LaValley singled, Aristides Aquino walked, Avain Rachal sacrificed the runners to second and third, and Jimmy Pickens delivered a hit to right field to bring in LaValley. Aquino was called out on the same play as he tried to score from second.

The Dragons (18-22 in the second half; 57-53 overall) travel to Davenport, Iowa to battle the Quad Cities River Bandits (27-13, 72-36) in the first game of the three-game series on Friday at 8:00 p.m. (EDT). Tyler Mahle (11-5, 2.51) will start for Dayton. Elieser Hernandez (1-1, 1.96) will pitch for Quad Cities. The next Dragons home game is Tuesday, August 11 vs. the Peoria Chiefs.

All Dragons games are broadcast on radio on Fox Sports 980 WONE and on the internet at wone.com. Games are also available on the Dayton Dragons mobile app.

Notes: The error by Reynoso in the bottom of the ninth was the only error by the Dragons in the three-game series. Both of the ninth inning runs by Cedar Rapids were unearned because of the error.
