Lake County Captains News Release

(Peoria, IL) -The Lake County Captains and Peoria Chiefs found themselves in the middle of an old fashion pitcher's duel on Thursday night. While the Captains would out hit Peoria, the Chiefs would draw four walks in the bottom of the eighth inning to score the game winning run. The 2-1 win completes a three game sweep by Peoria.

One night after running into arguably the hottest pitcher in the Midwest League in Austin Gomber, the Captains were limited by Chiefs' righty Jack Flaherty. Flaherty would set a career high by striking out twelve Captains over six innings of work.

The Chiefs would strike first in the bottom of the fourth inning. Harrison Bader continued to terrorize Captains pitching when singled to start the inning. Alex DeLeon would then follow with a single to move Bader to third with no outs. Bader would score the first run of the game on a Nick Thompson RBI sacrifice fly to rightfield.

Lake County would finally get to Flaherty to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning. Taylor Murphy doubled off the wall in leftfield to start the inning. A wild pitch would then move him to third with no outs. Bobby Bradley would bring Murphy home with the tying run. Bradley lifted a sacrifice fly to the wall in straight away centerfield to score Murphy to tie the game 1-1.

The game would stay tied until the bottom of the eighth inning. With both starters out of the game with no decisions, the Chiefs would get Andrew Sohn on base with a walk to start the inning. With two outs and one on base, Captains' reliever Cameron Hill would walk the next two batters to load the bases with two outs. Nick Thompson would then follow by drawing a four pitch walk to bring home the eventual game winning run and a 2-1 lead.

The Captains would go in order to finish the game in the top of the ninth inning.

Sheffield got a no decision in 6.0 innings of work. He allowed 1 earned run on 5 hits. Sheffield did not walk a batter and struck out 4. Hill (4-4) took the loss in 1.2 innings of relief. He allowed 1 earned run on no hits. He walked 4 and struck out 2. Nick Pasquale went the final 0.1 inning in relief. He did not allow a run, hit or walk. Pasquale did not record a strikeout.

The Captains matched a season high in the game by striking out fifteen times. Francisco Mejia saw his hitting streak come to an end at eleven games after striking out four times.
