LumberKings Swept with 9-3 Loss to West Michigan

Clinton LumberKings News Release

Comstock Park, MI - With a one-run loss in each of the first two games of the series, the Clinton LumberKings (8-32, 34-75) appeared to be close to their first win vs. the Eastern Division in 2015. Thursday night however, that still remained the goal, as the West Michigan Whitecaps (22-17, 55-53) capped off a series sweep with a 9-3 win. The Whitecaps scored the first four runs of the game and the final five and maintained a lead in the wild card race.

The Whitecaps built an early lead vs. Clinton starter Jarrett Brown (L, 1-6), as the lefty allowed a run in the first inning and three runs in the second. Christin Stewart's RBI single in the first made it 1-0, while Rashad Brown highlighted the three-run second with a two-RBI double, as West Michigan led 4-0. Brown settled in however and did not allow another run over his five-inning outing.

Opposite Brown, Spencer Turnbull (W, 9-3) was sharp early, but faded in the fourth and fifth. An infield RBI single by Kristian Brito got Clinton on the scoreboard and made it 3-1, while a bizarre wild pitch/error on the catcher made it 4-3. With runners on the corners, two outs, and Chris Mariscal at the plate, Turnbull's wild pitch plated Austin Cousino from third and allowed Pat Leyland to reach second base. Catcher Kade Scivicque retrieved the ball from the backstop and thought the home plate umpire granted him time out, so he flipped the ball to the home dugout. But JC Velez-Morales did not signal time out, as the ball remained live, and Leyland came around to score from second base. That was as close as Clinton got, as the Whitecaps broke it open in the seventh inning.

Pat Peterson relieved Brown to begin the sixth inning, and after a clean frame, the lefty allowed a solo home run to Mike Gerber in the seventh. He left with a runner on first and two outs, as Jeffeson Medina entered but did not record an out. Medina walked Joey Pankake, Will Kengor reached on an error by Chris Mariscal, and Francisco Contreras drew a walk. David Gonzalez plated two unearned runs with a single, and an RBI double by Brown knocked Medina out of the game. Medina allowed two hits, walked a pair, and allowed three unearned runs. Ronald Dominguez then recorded the final four defensive outs for Clinton.

Trey Teakell was brilliant over three perfect innings of relief for West Michigan, while Johan Belisario pitched a scoreless ninth inning. Brown and Gerber each finished with a game high three hits, while Estarlyn Morales provided the only multi-hit game for Clinton. Morales also added to his team lead in outfield assists, as he threw out a runner at third base and at the plate in the first inning.

Still winless vs. the East, Clinton will head to South Bend and begin a set with the Cubs. Friday night, Eddie Campbell (1-0, 3.75) will make his third start for Clinton, while James Norwood (0-1, 6.32) will make his third start and ninth appearance for South Bend. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 CT at Four Winds Field. The LumberKings broadcast can be heard on WCCI 100.3 FM, WCCIRadio.com, and LumberKings.com.
