Dayton Dragons News Release

Grand Rapids, Mich. - Three West Michigan pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout as the Whitecaps defeated the Dayton Dragons 2-0 on Thursday night. The game was shortened by rain to eight innings. Play was stopped with West Michigan batting in the bottom of the eighth, runners at second and third with no outs, and the contest could not resume due to continued rain.

West Michigan has won two-of-three so far in the six-game series. Dayton's victory came in the series opener Tuesday, 5-0, but the Whitecaps have held the Dragons offense to a combined total of one run over the last two games in the set.

West Michigan scored single runs in the third and fifth innings while limiting the Dragons to just two hits, both singles. Dayton's Blake Dunn had a lead-off single in the fourth, marking the first Dragons base runner of the game. In the seventh, Edwin Arroyo lined a two-out single to left field for the Dragons second hit. In the top of the eighth, down by two runs, the Dragons had a chance to score. Mat Nelson reached on an error to start the inning and Jack Rogers drew a one-out walk. But both Trey Faltine and Justice Thompson struck out to strand the runners at first and second.

Dragons starting pitcher Javi Rivera (0-2) pitched well but was charged with the loss. Rivera went five innings, allowing five hits and two runs with no walks and five strikeouts. Vin Timpanelli tossed two scoreless innings. Owen Holt entered the game to pitch the bottom of the eighth and allowed a walk and single before rain caused the game to be halted and eventually called.

Up Next: The Dragons (4-8) and West Michigan (8-4) battle again on Friday night at 6:35 p.m. in the fourth game of the six-game series. Thomas Farr (0-2, 1.80) will make his third start of the year for Dayton.

The next Dragons home game is Tuesday, April 25 against the Lake County Captains at Day Air Ballpark in the heart of the Water Street District. For ticket information, go to daytondragons.com or call (937) 228-2287.
