Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Beloit, WI - With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Cedar Rapids put runners on second and third. But, again, a late hit escaped the Kernels as the team drops its third straight to Beloit, 3-2.
For the third time in as many games at ABC Supply Stadium, Cedar Rapids hopped on the board first. An RBI triple by Kala'i Rosario chased home Noah Miller in the top of the first frame to put the Kernels ahead 1-0. Rosario finished the night 4-4 and a home run shy of the Cycle.
Like Beloit has done all series long, the Sky Carp didn't take long to respond. With two outs in the second inning Kyler Castillo dibble a ball up the third base line, fielded by pitcher Jordan Carr who threw it up the line at first off the glove of Keoni Cavaco, scoring Ynmanol Marinez to tie the game at 1-1.
The Sky Carp would take the lead in the fifth inning; Kernels' starter Jordan Carr put two runners on with one out in the frame before being taken out of the contest. The lefty finished with a line of 4.1 innings, six hits, two runs, one earned, a walk and three strikeouts, earning a no-decision. Mike Paredes entered out of the Kernels bullpen in his Cedar Rapids debut, and the first batter he faced Yiddi Cappe, lined a single to give Beloit a 2-1 lead.
Ben Ross tied the tally for the Kernels in the top of the sixth, smashing his second home run of the season, this one to left-center field, to make it even at 2-2.
For the third night in a row, Beloit's starter pitched six or more innings; Alex Williams went sixth frames and got a no-decision allowing those two runs on four Kernels hits.
Beloit untied the game in the seventh inning on another Cappe RBI single, this one off Regi Grace, to give the Sky Carp the lead again at 3-2.
That would be the score in the top of the ninth when the Kernels came to the plate for their final at-bats. Misael Urbina looped a double into right field to start the inning, and after a Jose Salas strikeout, Kyler Fedko roped a single through the left side to put runners on the corners with one out. Willie Joe Garry Jr pinch ran for Fedko and stole second base on the third strike of the Keoni Cavaco strikeout putting runners on second and third with two outs for Charles Mack. Matt Pushard would win the battle with Mack, striking him out to end the game 3-2.
The loss in the sixth in a row for Cedar Rapids (5-6) and the third straight to begin the series in Beloit (8-4). The two sides square off again in game four of the set tomorrow night. Alejandro Hidalgo gets his second start of the season for Cedar Rapids against Beloit's Edgar Sanchez.
