July 27, 2022 - Midwest League (MWL)
West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
Comstock Park, Michigan - For thousands of Whitecaps fans, this Thursday night's game vs. the Dayton Dragons will be a historic moment and a lesson in history. The game, starting at 6:35 pm, is Negro League Appreciation Night presented by Priority Health and Urban League of West Michigan.
"This a special night for the Whitecaps, West Michigan, and for Black baseball players from around the county who we intend to honor," said Whitecaps Community Relations Manager Jenny Garone. "The community is invited to help us pay tribute to the Grand Rapids Black Sox and to convey our deep appreciation to some of the surviving members of the Negro Leagues."
Portions of the gate proceeds, and jersey auction will go to support the Urban League of West Michigan. The Whitecaps will also wear replica uniforms of the Grand Rapids Black Sox. The game-worn jerseys are being auctioned online here.
"We hope the fans will sense the importance of the night," said Outreach Specialist for Cure Violence Urban League of Western Michigan, Johnny Burress, "It is important to honor the incredible legacy of the Negro Leagues and be able to continue to share their story with the West Michigan community."
Participating in the tribute will be several honorees including Johnny Walker, Rex Jones, Dan Groce, Ray Richardson, Neal Smith, Buzzy Brown, Roscoe Price, Minnie Forbes (former team owner), and Ted Rasberry's son, Ricky Rasberry.
The Negro League Appreciation Night at LMCU Ballpark is Thursday, July 28th with pre-game ceremonies beginning at 6:00 pm.
