Dayton Dragons News Release
Grand Rapids, Mich. - The West Michigan Whitecaps hit a pair of two-run home run and shut down the Dayton offense on Wednesday night as the Whitecaps topped the Dragons 4-1. West Michigan has won the first two games of the six-game series.
The Dragons loss dropped their second half record to 6-18 (45-45 overall). West Michigan, in first place in the Midwest League East Division, improved to 20-6 in the second half (51-41 overall).
The Dragons have lost nine consecutive road games, one short of the club record set in 2009. Their last road victory came on June 30.
Game Recap: West Michigan got two-run home runs from Josh Crouch in the second inning and Corey Joyce in the sixth to take a 4-0 lead. The Dragons only run came on an eighth inning lead-off home run from Quincy McAfee, his first since his return to the Dragons on Friday.
The Dragons had several chances to score in the early and middle innings. They advanced runners into scoring position in the second, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, but went a combined 0 for 7 in those situations. Dayton is 0 for 10 in the series with men in scoring position.
Dayton second baseman Tyler Callihan had a strong night at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a walk. The Dragons finished with six hits. Along with McAfee's home run, J.V. Martinez had a double and Justice Thompson contributed a single.
Dragons pitchers held West Michigan to four hits in the game, but issued 11 walks, one short of the season high. Starting pitcher Miguel Medrano (1-3) was charged with the loss, allowing two runs in three innings.
Reliever Jake Stephenson followed Medrano and worked two scoreless innings. Jake Gozzo allowed two runs in his only inning of work. Jayvien Sandridge made his Dayton debut and walked three in his inning on the mound, but struck out two and kept the Whitecaps scoreless. James Marinan pitched a scoreless inning as well.
Up Next: The Dragons and Whitecaps meet again in the third game of the series on Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. Christian Roa (3-3, 3.91) will start for Dayton. Roa has not allowed a run in his last three starts covering 14 innings.
The Dragons return home to Day Air Ballpark in the heart of the Water Street District on Tuesday, August 2 when they host the Peoria Chiefs (St. Louis Cardinals affiliate) in the start of a six-game series. For ticket information, go daytondragons.com/tickets or call (937) 228-2287.
