3 Homers Power Another South Bend Comeback
July 27, 2022 - Midwest League (MWL)
South Bend Cubs News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - Make it three wins in a row for the Cubs, who entered today with 32 wins at home, four more than any other team in the Midwest League, and added another one in front of a Tuesday night crowd of 4,928.
South Bend launched three long balls in the series opener, after clobbering five in Sunday's 13-12 win. The Cubs have now homered in a season high seven games in a row.
Dalton Stambaugh made his first appearance with South Bend since April and got off to a rocky start. Lake County got to him in the form of three runs on four base hits in the first inning. Alexfri Planez hit a two-run homer and Gabriel Rodriguez singled home Petey Halpin to give the Captains a 3-0 lead in the first.
This is the first time these two sides are meeting since the Cubs last home series of the year in 2021, a game that finished 1-0 and featured Jordan Wicks making his pro debut. This game would have a lot more action.
In the second inning with two outs and no one aboard Pablo Aliendo got under a pitch and sent a high fly to shallow left-center field. What should've been an out resulted in three players converging and no one stepping up to make the play. B.J. Murray made them pay as he stepped up next and catapulted his first homer in exactly two months, and first with South Bend, to bring the Cubs within a run.
Stambaugh settled in on the hill after the first, tossing four scoreless innings the rest of his outing despite allowing leadoff singles in the third, fourth, and fifth inning. He erased those three baserunners with two double plays and by picking off Korey Holland in the fifth.
Later that same inning Luis Verdugo scorched a two-run homer to left to put the Cubs up in the game for the first time, 4-2.
The Captains led off yet another inning with a single to begin the sixth and finally cashed it in. With two outs and two men on Aaron Bracho tied the game with a single to right toward the line. But despite three hits and a walk in the inning, Lake County got just the one run as the Cubs turned their third double play of the game.
With two outs and the bases empty in the Cubs half of the sixth, Kevin Made stepped to the plate. The 19-year-old fell behind 0-2 and battled back for the plate appearance of the night, working a nine-pitch walk. Aliendo followed with his second single of the night, a base hit to left that sent Made to third and the Cubs catcher advanced to second behind him. That gave Murray a shot and he delivered. Murray ripped a double to left that put the Cubs up 6-4 and brought B.J. to within a triple of the cycle.
Two insurance runs came in the eighth as Jake Washer hit a towering two-run blast, his fourth home run in the last three games.
Riley Martin and Hunter Bigger tossed the final 3.1 innings without allowing a run or a hit. Martin took home the win and Bigge his seventh save.
The Cubs will look to make it four wins in a row on Wednesday night, with first pitch set for 7:05 ET.
