
Lake County Pen' Sensational against South Bend in 4-3 Win

(SOUTH BEND, IN) - Lake County Captains (49-41) relievers threw a combined five scoreless innings, which propelled the Captains to a 4-3 win over the South Bend Cubs (52-40) on an overcast Wednesday evening at Four Winds Field.
After a 29-minute rain delay, Tommy Mace took the ball for Lake County and was greeted by Owen Caissie who belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the first. The right-hander would settle down, getting a 4-6-3 double play in the second and a 1-2-3 10-pitch third inning.
The Captains tied up the game in the fourth. After grounding into two double plays through the first three frames. Petey Halpin singled with two outs in the fourth, to get the ball rolling. Johnathan Rodriguez then leveled a 0-1 pitch deep over the right field fence to make it a 2-2 game.
South Bend would reclaim the lead in the bottom of the fourth, with a double from Pablo Aliendo, Mace would finish the fourth with two groundouts
From there the Captains' bullpen went to work. Alaska Abney tossed a 14-pitch 1-2-3 fifth inning. Mason Hickman worked two scoreless, and escaped runners on the corners with no outs, getting a pickoff, strikeout and lineout in the sixth inning. Davis Sharpe got the final two innings, allowing the potential tying runner to reach in both, but closing the door twice
Lake County took the lead in the sixth, after two singles from Alexfri Planez and Petey Halpin. Johnathan Rodriguez was hit by a pitch and a walk to Gabriel Rodriguez tied up the game. Micael Ramirez gave the Captains the lead on an infield single that was misplayed by the South Bend defense.
Lake County and South Bend square off for game three tomorrow Thursday, July 28. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
