July 6, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
DAVENPORT, IA - For the second time in three games, Quad Cities used a six-run inning to take the lead and wound up with a 9-3 victory over the Whitecaps.
Eric Verbryke bashed a grand slam to cap the sixth inning and chase starting pitcher Andrew Kown from the game. In the series opener on Monday, Verbryke hit a two-run homer to cap the six-run seventh in an 8-1 triumph.
West Michigan took a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Catcher Chris Robinson collected his first Midwest League RBI on a ground out in the second that allowed Luis Sabino to score. Brent Dlugach drove a sacrifice fly to center in the third for a 2-0 Whitecaps edge. Sabino made the lead 3-0 on an RBI single later in the inning. Quad Cities cut the lead to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the fourth. The Swing sent eleven to the plate in the sixth as six of the first seven batters in the inning scored. Kown was charged with eight runs (seven earned) in 5.1 innings. Matt Righter finished the game and gave up the ninth Swing run in the seventh on back-to-back two-out doubles by Matt Lemanczyk and Matt Shepherd. The second double dropped to the ground when Sabino lost the fly ball in centerfield. Matt Scherer started for Quad Cities and earned the victory, even though he allowed all three West Michigan runs. Central Michigan product Jason Cairns (two innings) and Dennis Medina combined to retire the last nine Whitecaps hitters of the game. Sabino went 2-for-4 with a stolen base. Jeff Frazier was 1-for-4 as he doubled and scored for West Michigan in the third. Frazier is now on a 12-game hitting streak.
Substitution: Swing manager Joe Cunningham remained away from the team due to a health issue with his father, former Major Leaguer Joe Cunningham, Jr. The Cardinals sent former Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres Manager Jim Riggleman to manage the game for Quad Cities. Riggleman is currently the Minor League Field Coordinator for St. Louis.
Another Split Opportunity: West Michigan can earn a 2-2 split in the series against the West Division leaders with a win Thursday afternoon. RHP Josh Kauten (3-1, 3.38) will be on the mound for the Whitecaps against Quad Cities RHP Phillip Andersen (2-1, 2.55). First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The Eikenhout Incorporated Pre Game Show begins at 12:50 p.m. on 1340 AM WBBL and at mlive.com.
