Lansing Lugnuts News Release
DAYTON - Ryan Klosterman's three-run double in the fifth inning turned a 6-5 defecit into an 8-6 advantage for the Lugnuts and the visitors held on to defeat Dayton by that same 8-6 score on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field in Dayton.
The Lugnuts jumped out big time on Philippe Valiquette in the first, scoring five times to take a 5-0 lead and chased the young lefty from the game. Eric Nielsen's RBI single scored Jason Armstrong to put Lansing ahead and Luke Hetherington's two-out single brought home Nielsen and made it 2-0. Later, Hetherington scored on a wild pitch and Yuber Rodriguez collected a two-run single to turn it into a five-run inning and chase Valiquette.
The Dragons got on the board in the bottom of the first off Po-Hsuan Keng when Drew Anderson connected for a solo homer, his fourth, making it 5-1.
That score held until the bottom of the fourth when Dayton struck for five runs off Keng and Jordan Timm. RBI's by Tonys Guiterrez and Bradley Key cut the Lansing lead to 5-3 and Bobby Mosby's three-run homer off Timm put Dayton in the lead.
That lead proved to be brief. With one out in the fifth, the Lugnuts collected four straight hits off Jon George(4-4) to retake the advantage. Nielsen started it off with an infield single and David Hicks followed with a single to right. Hetherington singled to left to load the bases and Klosterman cleared them on the first pitch he saw, putting the Lugnuts up 8-6.
Scott Roy(1-2) earned his first win as a Lugnut by working an inning and two-thirds behind Timm. Joey McLaughlin and Jeremy Harper, who earned his fourth save, completed the bullpen work for Lansing as the trio combined to shutout the Dragons over the final five frames of action.
Hetherington collected four hits for the Lugnuts to help pace the 14-hit attack while B.J. Szymanski went 2-3 in a losing effort for the Dragons.
The Lugnuts will now go for the series victory tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. as they wrapup their eight-game road trip by sending Russ Savickas(3-2, 4.05) to the hill against Dayton's Josh Thigpen(4-3, 4.54).
