Burlington, IA (July 6, 2005) - Kyle Crist struck out a career-high seven and the Burlington Bees (6-8, 40-44) beat the South Bend Silver Hawks (9-5, 50-34) 7-5 at Community Field tonight. The Bees have won two in a row and lead this series two games to one. The Silver Hawks still lead the season series 4-3 going into tomorrow's finale.
The Bees got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. Irving Falu led off with an infield single to extend his hitting streak to 24 games. It was his only hit in four at-bats and he drew a walk. After Falu stole second, Mario Lisson got a base hit and also stole second to put runners on second and third. After a strikeout, Silver Hawks' starter Ross Ohlendorf walked Damaso Espino to load the bases and Brian McFall followed with a base hit to center to drive in two.
The Silver Hawks came back with two runs in the top of the second inning. Mark Reynolds and Alberto Gonzalez each drove in a run. The Silver Hawks took a 3-2 lead with a run in the third on an RBI double by Carlos Gonzales. The Bees took the lead back for good in the bottom of the third inning. Lisson and Geraldo Valentin singled to start the inning and Lisson scored on a base hit by Espino to tie the game. McFall singled to load the bases and Rusty Brown drove in Valentin with a sacrifice fly to left on a diving catch by Wilkin Castillo. Eddie Solis knocked a base hit to left to drive in McFall to make it 5-3 and the runners moved up to second and third when Castillo's throw went to the backstop for an error. Kenard Springer finished the rally with an RBI single past a diving Reynolds at third to drive in McFall.
Crist (7-1) didn't allow another run through six complete innings. He allowed seven hits and two walks and struck out a career-high seven. Crist ties Chad Blackwell for the team lead in wins and has seven victories in just eleven appearances on the year. Ohlendorf (6-6) came out after the third and suffered the loss. He did strike out four to take over the Midwest League lead with 95. Mark Rosen pitched three scoreless innings in relief. Todd Stein allowed an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh for the Bees final tally. Lisson was hit by a pitch, stole second, went to third when Orlando Mercado's throw skipped into center for an error, and scored on a single by Espino.
Adam Rowe finished the final three innings in relief for the Bees and picked up his fifth save to match Blackwell for the team lead in that category as well. Rowe allowed a run in the seventh and one in the ninth. Jereme Milons drove in both runs.
