Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, OH - Offense was the name of the game on Wednesday night in downtown Dayton. The Dayton Dragons (37-47, 7-7) and the Lansing Lugnuts (44-39, 7-7) combined for 14 runs and 22 hits, but the Dragons came up on the short end of an 8-6 final score in front of 8,260 at Fifth Third Field. Scott Roy (W, 1-2) earned the victory while Dragons reliever Jon George (L, 4-4) was tagged with the loss.
Lansing jumped on Dragons starter Philippe Valiquette (ND) right out of the gate, scoring five runs on as many hits in their half of the first inning. The visitors sent nine batters to the plate, all but two reached base; Valiquette threw a pair of walks and a pair of wild pitches to keep the first inning onslaught alive. The Dragons starter was lifted after just two-thirds on an inning in place of Zac Stott (ND). The Lugnuts carried a five run advantage before a Dragon player ever picked up a bat.
A solo home run from Drew Anderson plated the Dragons first run, making it 5-1 Lugnuts through one full inning and it stayed that way until the home half of the fourth inning; The Miami Valley's team exploded for five runs on four hits, the first one off Lugnuts starter Po-Hsuan Keng (ND) and the remaining four off of reliever Jordan Timm (ND). Bobby Mosby made the biggest dent in that fourth inning, knocking a three-run home run to the Dragons Lair in left field - giving Dayton a 6-5 advantage.
The lead did not last long, however; Stott was relieved after 3.1 innings of shutout baseball, allowing just two hits. George took the ball and tried to follow suit, but did not succeed. Off the Dragons reliever, the Lugnuts hit four consecutive one out hits, including a bases-clearing double from Ryan Klosterman. A three run inning allowed the Lugnuts to regain the lead at 8-6.
After the Dragons offensive outburst in the fourth inning, they were held relatively silent by Lugnuts pitching the rest of the way. Timm finished with 2.1 innings pitched, allowing four runs on four hits. Roy pitched most effectively, throwing 1.2 innings of scoreless one-hit relief to earn the win. Joey McLaughlin (ND) pitched 1.0 inning of perfect baseball to set up Jeremy Harper (S, 4) who pitched the ninth to earn the save.
The Dragons and Lugnuts close out their four game series Thursday night at Fifth Third Field with a 7:00 PM first pitch. 1410 ESPN Radio carries the game live with the pre game show beginning at 6:30 PM. RHP Josh Thigpen gets the starting nod for the Dragons while RHP Russ Savickas will throw for Lansing in the series finale.
