Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -- The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays presented the final morning start of the season in front of nearly 2,000 day campers only to lose 12-2 to the Clinton LumberKings Wednesday afternoon.
The Devil Rays were held hitless until the fifth inning when Craig Markel singled. The Rays scored both of their runs in the bottom of the ninth while down 12-0. Patrick Cottrell and Shaun Cumberland each recorded RBI hits.
Jarrad Lavergne continued to struggle in games pitched at home. He lasted into the sixth inning and surrendered six runs, five hits, five walks and registered only one strikeout. Relievers Matt Larson, Ryan Bitter and Tony Perez finished the game and allowed eight more hits, three walks and six runs. Lavergne fell to 0-8 in games he's pitched at home. His ERA in those contests is 7.14. In six road starts he is 3-0 with a 2.34 ERA.
The biggest star for the LumberKings was leadoff hitter Brandon Boggs who had four hits, which included a double and home run while driving in six runs. Devil Rays outfielder Fernando Perez had his 17-game hitting streak snapped with an 0-for-3 performance. He left the game after slightly colliding with Cottrell on a pop-up.
Southwest Michigan welcomed more than 30 groups to the 11:05 a.m. start. The Rays and LumberKings will conclude this four-game series in a Thirsty Thursday, July 7 game tomorrow evening at 7:05 p.m. LHP Jino Gonzalez (2-4, 4.32) will start for the Rays against Clinton's RHP Kyle Rogers (3-5, 6.10).
