Wheeling Takes 5-3 Homecoming Win From Cyclones

CINCINNATI - The Wheeling Nailers got a pair of goals from former Cyclone forward Thomas Beauregard and three assists from former Miami Redhawks defenseman Mitch Ganzak in a 5-3 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones on Tuesday night. Cyclones rookie Matt Pierce had a pair of goals to lead Cincinnati in the loss.

The Cyclones opened the scoring at 7:35 of the first period when rookie All-Star Matt Pierce scored his 19th goal of the season, shorthanded. Pierce snapped off a shot from the right wing side after evading a Wheeling defender. Brian O'Hanley and Barret Ehgoetz had the assists. It was the league-leading 23rd time this season that Cincinnati had the opening goal of the contest. Wheeling responded with the next two goals. Casey Pierro-Zabotel netted his ninth of the season working a two-on-one up the right side. Thomas Beauregard and Mitch Ganzak picked up the helpers. The Nailers took the lead at 14:04 of the opening frame when Chris Davis stuffed the puck inside the left post for his fifth score of the campaign. Cleve Kinley and Jordan Fox had the assists. The shots on goal in the first period were even at nine apiece.

The Nailers extended the lead with a pair of goals in the second period to 4-1. Former Cyclone Thomas Beauregard netted his 21st goal of the season on the power play at7:40 from Alex Grant and Ganzak. Grant fired a shot off the end boards on the right wing side that was grabbed at the bottom of the left circle by Beauregard into the net. Zack Sill's first goal of the season came on a shorthanded tally at 15:27. With Cyclones goaltender Jeremy Smith in the right corner playing a puck around the boards in back of the vacated net on the power play- Sill knocked down the puck and emerged on the left side of the empty net and slipped it in. Just 41 seconds later on the same power play- Cincinnati closed the gap to 4-2, when Pierce collected his second of the night and 20th of the season from Jozsa and Brett Motherwell. The Cyclones won the shots battles, 12-5, in the period.

The Cyclones crept to within one when Brett Robinson picked up his eighth goal of the season, charging up the left wing side and slipping the puck past Michael-Lee Teslak. Hans Benson and Jozsa had the helpers. The scoring concluded when Beauregard netted his second of the night and 22nd of the year at 15:38, cutting across the slot toward the right wing side. Pierro-Zabotel and Ganzak had the assists. The shots again favored Cincinnati, 9-6, in the period and 30-20 for the game.

Cincinnati was one-for-six on the power play, while Wheeling was one-for-five with the man-advantage. Michael-Lee Teslak ended a five-game road winning streak (dating back to November 14 while he was with Elmira) with a 27 save effort. Jeremy Smith slipped to 11-8-1 on the season with a 15 save performance.

The first half of the season is now over for the Cyclones- who tie the mark for second-most wins (22) at the midway point in club history. The 2007-08 edition of the Cyclones, which won the Kelly Cup, has the most wins halfway through at 25. Previously, the 1995-96 team (then located in Louisville) held the outright mark for second-best with 22 victories.

Cincinnati is 22-13-1, while Wheeling is 20-16-2. The Cyclones are next in action tomorrow night when the Kalamazoo Wings are in for a 'Wet Wednesday' event with dollar cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon and Miller High Life. The winner will take possession of first place in the division.

NOTES: Goaltender Robert Mayer and defenseman Jason Jozsa were returned to the Cyclones prior to the game...Cincinnati has sent eleven players to the American Hockey League this season.
