Last week, the Wheeling Nailers hit a minor bump in the road, as they suffered back-to-back losses for the first time in the 2014-15 season. On Friday night, the Nailers got off to a solid start against the Orlando Solar Bears, leading 3-1 in the middle of the second period. However, Orlando roared back with five unanswered goals for a 6-3 win. Matia Marcantuoni, Max MacKay, and Derek Army were the goal scorers for Wheeling, while former Nailer Denver Manderson found the back of the net for his new squad, the Solar Bears. On Saturday night, the Nailers made their first ever trip to Indy, and built a 2-1 lead on first period markers by Riley Brace and Patrick McGrath. Unfortunately, penalty trouble caught up with Wheeling, as the Fuel went 2-for-8 on the power play, erasing the deficit for a 3-2 victory. Eric Hartzell made 30 saves in his first start of the season for the Nailers, after going 2-0-0 with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
Matia Marcantuoni has at least one point in all five games he has played with the Nailers, while Riley Brace extended his point streak to six, as both players found their way onto the scoresheet over the weekend. Brace has also been involved in the scoring of all three shorthanded goals this season, scoring two and assisting on one. Patrick McGrath's goal on Saturday night was the first of his professional career in his 52nd game. Prior to Eric Hartzell's start on Saturday, Franky Palazzese had played in each of Wheeling's nine previous contests, making him the final ECHL goaltender to receive his first night off. Four of the last six games have been decided by one goal, but the Nailers remain the only team in the Eastern Conference that has yet to require overtime.
This Week
Wed. 11/19 Elmira Jackals @ WHEELING NAILERS, 10:35 AM
Sat. 11/22 WHEELING NAILERS @ Elmira Jackals, 7:05
Sun. 11/23 WHEELING NAILERS @ Elmira Jackals, 4:05
This week, the Wheeling Nailers will get their first look at the Elmira Jackals, as they will play the first three tilts in the 13-game season series. The two sides will clash in Wheeling on Wednesday morning at 10:35, before completing the set in Elmira on Saturday and Sunday. The Nailers and Jackals played a morning game at WesBanco Arena on November 15th, 2011, with Wheeling coming out on top 5-3, thanks to two goals and three points by Chris Barton. Elmira has had a much better start to the 2014-15 campaign, as compared to 2013-14, as the Jackals are currently tied for second place in the East Division with a 7-3-2 record, good for 16 points. Over the weekend, Elmira swept a pair of games from the Evansville IceMen, coming back to win 4-2 on Friday, before leading all the way in a 4-1 triumph on Saturday. The Nailers won 12 of the 15 head-to-head meetings a year ago, but the Jackals lead the all-time series, 38-34. The Wheeling/Elmira battle will feature two former Providence College assistant coaches behind the benches, as Clark Donatelli takes on Jamie Russell.
