Wheat Kings Reassign Four, Add Thom
September 21, 2015 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings have announced a number of player moves in preparation for the 2015-16 Western Hockey League season.
In addition to reassigning three 15-year old prospects to AAA Midget, the WHL club has designated another for reassignment and announced that a former Wheat King is rejoining the team from the Alberta Junior Hockey League.
Heading to Midget camps this week are forwards Caiden Daley and Rylan Bettens as well as defenceman Garrett Sambrook. Daley and Bettens, who were Brandon's first and third round picks in this year's WHL Bantam Draft, are going to the Winnipeg AAA Midget Wild, Sambrook is heading to the Southwest AAA Midget Cougars.
In four pre-season games this month, Daley had a goal and three points, Bettens had an assist and Sambrook, who was Brandon's sixth round bantam pick in May, served two minor penalties.
In other moves announced Monday afternoon, netminder Josh Dechaine will be reassigned while 19-year old defenceman Dominic Thom has been added to the club's roster.
Chosen by Brandon in the ninth round (187th overall) in the 2011 bantam draft, Thom played in two games for the Wheat Kings during the 2013-14 season before being traded to the Prince George Cougars in August 2014. A Calgary product, Thom began this season with the Alberta Junior Hockey League's Calgary Mustangs, where he had one assist and 8 penalty minutes in three games.
A 17-year old native of St. Albert, Dechaine appeared in two pre-season games this year, posting a 4.00 goals against average and an .818 save percentage.
Monday's moves leaves the Wheat Kings with 25 players on their roster - two goalkeepers, seven defenceman and sixteen forwards. That number includes five players, including Ivan Provorov, who remain at National Hockey League Training Camps. The seventh overall selection in this year's NHL Draft, Provorov is currently skating with the Flyers in Philadelphia. The others are Jayce Hawryluk (Florida), John Quenneville (New Jersey), Tim McGauley (Washington) and Reid Duke (Minnesota Wild).
The Wheat Kings will kick off their 2015-16 regular season schedule this Friday night against Swift Current. Tickets to the game, which will feature a special pre-game ceremony, are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com.
