Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings kicked off a big weekend Friday night with a 4-1 victory over the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers at Westoba Place.

Ben McCartney scored two third period goals and the Wheat Kings unleashed a season high 53 shots as Brandon improved to 10-4-3-3 on the season.

The Wheat Kings came out hard in this game, outshooting the Tigers 26-7 in the first and drawing first blood with back to back goals by rookie Ridly Greig and veteran Linden McCorrister. Friday night was Greig's first game back with Brandon since returning from the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge while McCorrister's goal came in front of over fifty fans that travelled from his home of Peguis.

In the second period, Baxter Anderson cut into Brandon's lead, before McCartney struck for two goals in the third to put the game away.

Brandon coach David Anning says a quick start and a strong finish made the difference.

"We had a lot of offensive zone time and I thought we had guys going to the hard area," Brandon coach David Anning told Perry Bergson of the Brandon Sun. "We were able to shoot pucks, get it to the net and then recover those pucks and generate some second chances and then continue to play in the offensive zone. There were a lot of positives that way. And I thought our goaltender (Ethan Kruger) made three key saves in the first period and those were critical moments in the game that allowed us to get out to a 2-0 lead."

Kruger finished the night with 34 saves in what was likely his best ever Western Hockey League start.

Brandon went 0-for-2 on the power play, with Medicine Hat missing on its only chance - coming in the third period with the score 2-1.

The Wheat Kings home stand continues Saturday night as the number one ranked team in the country - the league leading Prince Albert Raiders - will make their first appearance of the season in Brandon.

The Raiders are currently 19-1-0-0 on the season, after edging the Tri-City Americans 3-1 on Friday.

The first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a special WHL rally towel, courtesy of Wawanesa Insurance and Guild Insurance HMS.

Tickets to the game will go back on sale at 10am Saturday at the Keystone Centre box office. Fans can also order online at keystonecentre.com or by calling (204) 726-3555.

Brandon will close out this season high home stand this coming week with games on Wednesday and Friday nights against Edmonton and Lethbridge respectively.

Wednesday's game is the first of two Rain Check games of the season, which means any unused 2018-19 ticket can be exchanged at the box office for a free ticket to this game.

On Friday meanwhile the Wheat Kings will don special Agriculture theme jerseys, in support of 4-H Manitoba. Fans will be able to bid on the jerseys throughout the first two periods of the game.

This will be the first of only two theme jersey promotions for the WHL club this season.
